In the S::Select
® process, conventional activated sludge is transformed into an
aerobic granular sludge (AGS). Slow-growing bacteria (e.g. nitrifying bacteria) are enriched and fast-growing bacteria (e.g. heterotrophic bacteria) are preferentially reduced.
The specific density of the sludge (g/cm3) is significantly increased and the
settling rate increases accordingly. The return sludge can be massively reduced.
Filamentous organisms experience a locational disadvantage and are no longer a disruptive factor during operation. The performance of the activated sludge plant becomes considerably higher and much more stable.
The surplus sludge can be better thickened, the retention time in the digester becomes longer, and the degree of sludge stabilization increases. The energy balance of the entire plant is significantly improved.
