The sedimentation behavior of the activated sludge is of decisive importance both in the dimensioning of a plant and in the operation of the activated sludge. Poor settling properties (bulking sludge) mean large volumes in terms of dimensioning and considerable problems in operation.

Aerobic granular activated sludge (AGS) (S::Select^® process) has excellent settling properties and thus allows significantly more economical dimensioning (factor 2–3) and, above all, permanently stable operation.
