Precipitation and flocculation are part of the overall removal process in the majority of wastewater treatment plants. The following goals are pursued:
• Elimination of phosphorus
• Elimination of suspended substances, improvement of effluent quality
• improvement of sludge sedimentation (
bulking sludge)
Dissolved substances are converted into an undissolved form. Fine particles are incorporated into larger and stable floc. For this purpose, precipitants such as ferric or aluminum are used. In addition, flocculants (anionic or cationic) can be used.
