Extracellular polymeric substance (EPS)

Extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) is an important component in biological wastewater treatment in the field of flocculation and formation of granular structures in activated sludge. Microorganisms secrete EPS in different compositions depending on environmental conditions. In the process, the EPS forms a matrix. The main components are proteins, polysaccharides, humic acids, nucleic acids, lipids and other materials. Depending on the structure and composition, the EPS additionally promotes mass transfer, generates synergies (increase in turnover rates) and provides improved protection against toxicity.

Especially in the S::Select® process, framework conditions are created to achieve the implementation and permanent existence of granulated sludge. Thus, the advantages of granulated sludge can be used with the S::Select® process for an improved operation of wastewater treatment plants.
